In the 1960s, the photographer worked bare-chested, a scarf around his neck, in a clearing in the woods, his Hasselblad mounted on a tripod. This is the origin of the exhibition title, “The Neck Scarf.”
That photographer is still active today, holding exhibitions roughly once a year. At a show I saw last year at Akio Nagasawa Gallery, a series of unpretentious monochrome photographs lined the walls. In the distance between the photographer and the model — shot quietly in dim light — I felt, from one photographer’s perspective, a beauty that was nothing short of exquisite. And I was deeply moved. At a time when many photographers seem to shy away from the nude, here was someone who has continued to face it head-on. In that posture, I found something I myself should be reaching toward. And I felt, too, the difficulty and integrity of continuing to shoot over a long life.
This issue features the work of our participating photographers.
My message to them: I hope they will go on shooting for a long time, as Osamu Sawatari has done.
